ODP Trips. Personal Coaching Stories. Soccer.

San Antonio, TX.
It started here in 2014. My first Coaching Course Residency - C License. It was awful. 8 days of playing and coaching. All about meeting the instructors expectations for pass or fail. Instructors avoided you. Drawing everything by pencil and then pen because of limited blank session plan templates. I’m so glad to be a part of a progressive education experience as an educator now.
Then even further back to 2006. My first ever coaching course - the FA Level 1. My assessed activity was called the ‘Alamo’. A ‘shooting’ activity that seems insensitive having explored the real Alamo, but was my assessment and what started me on this soccer journey.
Love. Football.

Day 7. Olympic museum. Camp Nou.

Sometimes it’s different things. Training and playing is all a part of the process but this week we did a dads v lads game. A large part of my seasons growing up was this exact experience. It’s fun for the boys, it’s great to turn past your dad or put a goal in on him, but also great to laugh at his lack of skill when he coaches you from the sideline. All about the experience!
The boys also played 13 hours later and won 3-0, after some tough games lately. Maybe it’s coincidental, or maybe a 10-10 tie is the answer to turn results around! Either way, it’s great for coaches ego to play to against 13 year olds.

Winning is what I hope comes from a process. The process to this picture has been 4 years. Refining styles, building profiles, recruiting and coaching, and creating an environment that has been tweaked year over year is all a part of this process. It’s been full of influential coaches that have all played a serious part in what we created for our players to experience the ‘next level’. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity with @calnorth and ODP to lead the U13’s to this!

A very tough opening game at regional championships. A 4-1 loss, and a big game ahead today, but the environment is second to none! #odp

2015B, Silver 5 State Cup Champions!!!
What a roller coaster trip for these boys. They worked hard, made ‘fight’ their motto, and grabbed that trophy with an outstanding day of soccer π

Just a little journal makes a difference.
Pre - How are you feeling? What will you do if you make a mistake? What are you looking forward to?
Post - What was the experience like, compared to how you felt at the start? Did you handle mistakes how you said you would? What was your favorite part?

An incredibly successful event with a spectacular view this weekend. Will you support us? Between games I ran a ‘masterclass’ for coaches to help ‘unlock potential’ in their players. I’ll send you the material we discussed if you donate… Thank you!

From playing competitive games in front of regional team scouts, making lifetime friends, getting out of comfort zones, sleeping awkwardly, and spending time goal setting and reflecting, ODP is an amazing experience. These kids worked hard to impress, to challenge themselves, and to make lifetime friendships. β€οΈπ

What an amazing trip to the Far West Regional Championships with the USYS Olympic Development Program.
To coach in this program is a real honor. I love it. I love the players and I love the environment we get to create.
I cover some of the things we did for ‘managing the performance environment’ right here:

Enjoy.

In a recent CED task for @calnorthsoccer and @usyouthsoccerodp we watched a game and built a training schedule. It got me thinking…
Here you see an image that I based one of our training goals on.
Do you share images for supporting training goals/cycles with your players? After all, a picture paints a thousand words and the players could use this image for a deeper understanding of ‘why’.

Seems simple, but we don’t do a good enough job with the players who trust us with their development. Couple that with a lack of expertise in ‘experts’ and we have a soccer environment failing 90% of players. #soccer #development #youthsoccer #feedback #honest #kind #helpful #headsandvolleyspodcast

Well, this was quite a journey.
It started in January and was officially signed off 7 days ago.
Weekly meetings. Review periods. Independent work. Reflections. Teaching.
All whilst working on a hundred other things.
All to teach 4 hour grassroots courses.
It's a lot, but it's for the players, and for the benefit of the game.
It's not about me or my knowledge or ego. It's about guiding those future coaches to support their players by creating the best environment for them to have fun and to develop.
It's always about the players.
Encouraging the player.
Teaching them the game, and empowering them to make decisions and fall in love with the game, the same way we all have done.
That's how the game grows and how we create lifelong lovers of the beautiful game.

A reminder. Your tactics board can also be a message board for training. Just improve your handwriting ππ€¦βοΈ

Ask your players to think about why they play. Can they identify, can they explain, do they live by it? Have you asked them? How do you use their why to engage and motivate them?

It’s so important to ‘communicate’ and not just say ’ball’ but to show you want the ball, demand the ball, dictate the play with behavior. That’s the communication that’s lacking here.
