Common Language - BUILD
Xavi's quote is one of the best in the game: "Do something with the ball other than kick it out."
Simple. Direct. And the reason Barcelona dominated world football for a decade.
BUILD is the word I use when I want the team to keep the ball with purpose. To move it. To find the teammate. To resist the instinct to just hoof it forward and hope.
It sounds easy. It isn't. And it's one of the most important habits in the game to develop from a young age.
When I shout "BUILD" from the sideline, I'm saying: don't panic. We have the ball. Find the space. Find the teammate. Work it forward the right way.
BUILD isn't just about goal kicks — though that's where most coaches introduce it. BUILD is about recycling possession every time we can't go forward. It's about moving the opponent by making them chase the ball. It's about creating those moments where we can BREAK.
In fact, BUILD and BREAK are deeply connected. The best teams in the world BUILD until the moment opens up, and then they BREAK. They're patient. They're purposeful. They wear the opponent down and then exploit the space.
At 7v7, BUILD is foundational. For young players, the instinct is to kick it long — to clear the danger, to find the striker, to get it away from goal. That's natural. But we use the build-out line to encourage them to think differently. Can we play out from the back? Can we find someone in a better position? Can we keep it rather than give it away?
At 9v9, BUILD becomes more sophisticated. The field is bigger, there are more players, and the patterns start to develop. Building from goal kicks with a structure. Identifying pressure and playing around it. Using the third-man combination to escape a press.
At 11v11, BUILD is a style of play. It's an identity. Teams that can build — that can keep the ball, move the opponent, and create chances through patience — win games they shouldn't. They control the game even when the other team has better individual players.
If your child panics with the ball, BUILD is the word to focus on. Panic comes from not knowing what to do next. And BUILD gives them a default — when in doubt, find someone in a better position. Keep it. Move it. Don't give it away.
The goal isn't to be possession-obsessed. The goal is to be purposeful. We don't build for the sake of it — we build to create moments. To move the opponent. To find the weak spot. And when we see it — we BREAK.
That's next.
